What’s your New Year’s resolution? Is it to get fit? Or are you already a runner? Have you set yourself some goals for 2014? Perhaps this event is for you! On the March 30th, 2014, the 9th Germany Wine Road Marathon will take place just 35 minutes from the KMC.
The German-wine-road-marathon „Marathon Deutsche Weinstraße“, in the palatine region, is one of the most scenic road races in Germany. The start line is in the small wine village of Bockenheim in the WeinStaße (not to be confused with Bockenheim in Frankfurt). The course then runs along the vineyards of the „Leiningerland“ district, into the district of Freinsheim, through beautiful and romantic wine villages leading to the halfway- and turning-point at the giant wine barrel in the spa town of Bad Dürkheim.
But its not for the untrained athlete, the undulating course is both thrilling and challenging in equal measure, but its well supported and the cheering from the locals all along the route will carry you across the finish line when you weary legs can take you no further. Thankfully (for this writer!) there is a half-marathon option which is a great starter for anyone that is looking to make the step up from regular 10kms.
Germany is a fantastic country for supporting sporting events and the „Marathon Deutsche Weinstraße“ is no exception. As well as a very appropriate finisher’s medal – shaped as a bunch of grapes – the entry pack includes a bottle of local wine, some of which you can also sample at one of the many drinks stations along the route! Water and sports drinks are also provided for those that prefer to save the celebratory tipple until after the race.
Even if you are not a runner, this is a fantastic day-out in the Pfalz region. Experience the exuberant atmosphere as you cheer on runners who have given their all as they cross the line. What a fantastic way to enjoy a day in the local wine region.
Places are always very sought after and there is limited availability. Come on… be like a local, sign up here.
