I have a special love for daffodils, mainly because my grandmother always had these “March Flowers” in her yard. So seeing them instantly transports me to my childhood in Georgia. I also know that they are one of the first signs that spring is upon us, and for those of us who are not so fond of cold weather, then these little yellow flowers are a very welcome sight!
Daffodils Galore
Recently, I took a drive over to a neighboring village because I heard about Lake Ohmbachsee and the daffodils. There are about 120,000 daffodils planted along the hiking routes around this lake and they were just starting to bloom. The lake was a bit low, but it was easy to see that this is going to be a great place to visit during the summer.
Trails
Apparently, there are a few trails that are for hiking and/or biking. The sign for “Nature Fitness Park” directs you to the different options and fitness levels.
I saw several people walking (with and without pets) and a few bicycles. Also scattered around the lake are several benches and a couple of places to have a cook-out…complete with fire pits and picnic tables.
Boat Launch
The lake has a small boat launch (which I believe is for non-motorized boats) and a docking station which sits conveniently near the restaurant and playground. It appears as if you can rent paddle boats as well. I saw a couple of men fishing. Although they did not appear to be catching anything, they sure seemed to be having fun.
Restaurant and Playground
The restaurant is in the process of opening for the season. The playground is rather large and offers swings and a slide that dumps into a sandpit. It definitely made me want to be a kid again.
There is a small stage area for summer festivals and concerts! I have heard that there is a “Lake Fest” in the month of July which I will definitely be attending.
Nearby Campground
Campingpark Ohmbachsee is the nearby campground that offers a hotel, restaurant, tents and camping “barrels” for rent. They also have a nice playground for the kids and, according to their website, a bowling alley that can be rented out for birthday parties. On a side note: they “guarantee fun”, which I think is pretty cool.
If you want a romantic picnic for two, a hike with your bestie or a weekend treat for the kids, this lake has it all.
How to Get There
Ohmbachsee Lake is northwest of Bruchmühlbach-Miesau, between Elschbach and Schönenberg-Kübelberg. It is thirty minutes west of Kaiserslautern, 1 hour and 30 minutes southwest of Wiesbaden and 2 hours and 20 minutes northwest of Stuttgart.
