Brown foxes, wild boar and red squirrels are indigenous to the Taunus Mountains. However, thanks to Opel Zoo you can catch a glimpse of various other animals like elephants, giraffes, llamas and hippos in Kronberg!

Wonderful Place to Visit

Opel Zoo is a wonderful place to visit and see all of the animals up close and personal while also taking in the beautiful forest scenery around the park. Feel yourself becoming one with nature and enjoy the breathtaking view over hills and castles.

What to Expect

When you first arrive in the park, you are greeted by the zoo’s tallest residents: giraffes! Located in a big open field in the center, it is really a sight to see them when walking in.

Also located near the entrance are the very popular goats! They are happy to see you because they know you’ve come to feed them… and boy are they hungry! At the ticket counter you can buy a bag of carrots or grain from the vending machine next to the goat enclosure.

The path along the zoo is designed in one big loop, with other areas off the route that are not to be missed- pay attention to the maps that are plastered all over the premises. The next big stop is one of my absolute favorite animals, the elephant. You can toss in carrots and watch the elephants pick them up with their long trunks. It’s a real sight and can be quite meditative as rarely anything will disturb their peaceful chewing.

My family of cat lovers like loved checking out the not-so-domestic, wild cousin of our feline at home.

One of the most interactive and fun animals at Opel Zoo are the lamas! These friendly animals come right up to you to be fed and petted. I really believe he is saying “Cheese”!!! But beware! One of our writers tried to take a selfie with them and after they spat on her, one tried biting her head. (Which turned out to be the greatest souvenir of all, if you ask me.)

Yet another group of animals I absolute adore: pigs. Find some really big piggies and watch them waddle from feed trough to feed trough.

General Information

The Opel Zoo’s main attractions are clearly the numerous animals but there are amazing playground areas, too and they offer pony and camel rides for kids as well as recreational fun at the ball pit inside a wooden hut.

Many food stands around the zoo will keep you fed and energized throughout your visit. My favorite is the one next to the playground so I can get some coffee while watching the little ones run around.
