… and have the health you have always wanted.
Talking of death makes me feel uncomfortable. Like I imagine it does with many. But I have just come across an article online, which I found truly inspiring. And I think it is a life-changing lesson to us all.
It was by the palliative care nurse Bonnie Ware, she spent the last years interviewing her dying patients about the regrets they had in life. The part that really caught me first was ‘Ware writes of the phenomenal clarity of vision that people gain at the end of their lives, and how we might learn from their wisdom.’ It made me think, wouldn’t it be great if we could actually get that level of clarity throughout our lives. Now. Not just at the end. Ware came to the conclusion that there were five big reasons for regret which many of her patients shared. They were the following:
- I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.
- I wish I hadn’t worked so hard.
- I wish I’d had the courage to express my feelings.
- I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends.
- I wish that I had let myself be happier.
I hear the same from the people I coach. It usually takes people time to be brave enough to understand these things, but we all know deep down that these are true. We just get tied up in the day-to-day to truly appreciate what is really important in our lives.
The amazing thing about my job is that am able to help people come to this point where they understand what they want to get out of life before it’s too late. Now I know this sounds harsh but that’s the whole point of this article. It’s using the words of people who have been forced to contemplate themselves; sadly it is often too late for them to have years to enjoy this, but it’s not for others who are reading this. Like us.
I work with people who have decided that they don’t want to wake up in 20 years time regretting not doing something about their health. And helping people change and find the health they truly want always involves looking at all aspects of themselves. As I’ve said many time it’s not really about the training.
In the second part of this article I will offer some of the tools which I have used to help my clients to start to live the life they have always dreamed of. And have the health and body to match.
